SCOTTISH CHRISTMAS TREE GROWER WINS BATTLE FOR DOWNING STREET DISPLAY

For 20 years, a member of the British Christmas Tree Growers Association (BCTGA) has been awarded the most important honour of the year: to provide a tree to stand proud outside Number 10 Downing Street.

This year that privilege goes to John Junor of Farr North Christmas Trees in Inverness.

Described as the ‘Oscars’ of the Christmas tree growers’ calendar, John travelled more than 550 miles to attend the competition day in Somerset to battle it out for the accolade.

He received the most votes from his fellow growers to become ‘Grower of the Year’ and now will provide the 20ft Christmas tree to adorn the outside of the Prime Minister’s home.

He said: “I am thrilled to have received the votes of my fellow growers. It’s a true honour and a highlight for us growers. I cannot wait to have the tree delivered to this famous landmark for Christmas.”

This is the first time John has won the accolade.

The title of runner up ‘Grower of the Year’ was won by Cornwall -based James Adams of Ladydowns Christmas Trees. James will now provide a 11ft Christmas tree for the Pillared room.
The winner of ‘Champion Festive Wreath’ was Hans Alexandersen of HA Trim near Guildford who will provide the wreath to decorate the famous door.

Harry Brightwell, secretary of the British Christmas Tree Growers’ Association, said: “Every year we are delighted with the high standard of entries and the huge effort our growers put in to grow and pick the perfect tree, and create a lovely wreath, and this year was no exception.”

All entries are assessed and judged by fellow growers who vote on the best entry in each category and then vote for the best overall tree or wreath. Categories included Best Nordman, Best Other Fir, Best Pine, Best Norway Spruce, Best Other Spruce, Best Container Grown and Best Festive Wreath (natural and decorative).

In each section, trees will have been nurtured for around eight years to reach competition height of 1.8 metres – the most common height bought by the public. They will be judged on their foliage, colour, shape and marketability.

This annual competition is open to all members of the British Christmas Tree Growers Association, the trade association for those who grow specialist Christmas Trees in the UK.
BCTGA have a code of practice to promote trees being grown in an environmental and sustainable manner.

This year’s Downing Street competition was held at Secret Valley, Cobbs Cross Farm, Goathurst, Somerset, TA5 2DN on Thursday 25th October 2018.
